Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. As a young girl, her father was a carnival barker which left Ruth's mother with no choice but to be a cleaning woman and waitress to provide for the family. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She only attended the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting profession. It was a difficult path to pursue. Although she got a job in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication however, there were no theatre opportunities that were offered to her. Then, after a stint as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home to the United States and quit her job. It was there that she was able to earn a living in the ushering industry during the in the daytime, while at night she performing with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. Her studies in drama led her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
